to the Census of 1850 the population was recorded as 1,205.
Today the population is estimated to be approximately 20,000.
Towns other than Bonifay in the County include Esto, PonceDeLeon,
Westville, Poplar Springs, Noma and Prosperity. There are
also small communities and neighborhoods spread across the
County far too numerous to mention but equally important
in making Homes County a great place to live.
Welcome to Holmes County, Bonifay Florida “THE CROSSROADS OF NORTHWEST FLORIDA.” Four (4) major transportation arteries transverse Holmes County East and West, U.S. Highway 90, CSX Rail, State Highway 2, and Interstate 10 with exits to Florida highways 79 and 81 North and South, providing direct routes to The Beaches of Panama City, NW Florida Beaches International Airport and the deep water Port of Panama City, 45 minutes to the South. Six (6) major Military Bases, and the new Air Bus Assembly Factory, are within a 50 to 150 mile radius of Holmes County. There are eight (8) automobile manufacturing facilities within a one hundred twenty (120) to three hundred fifty (350) radius of Holmes County.
The Holmes County Development Commission, (HCDC) is THE economic development organization (EDO) for Holmes County. HCDC is here to serve the existing businesses and industries, as well as those businesses and industries looking at locating to Holmes County. We work closely with Florida's “Department of Economic Opportunity”, “Enterprise Florida”, “Opportunity Florida”, “Florida”s Great North West,” as well as our Regional EDOs.
A “Rural Area of Economic Opportunity,” We still have the “Southern Small Town” Charm and Hospitality. We have a workforce of 200,000 within a 50 mile commute radius. We have an excellent school system, A Vocational Technical Campus with Industrial Welding Certification courses, Industrial and Residential Electrical Certification, Computer, Residential Construction and many more, is within 5 miles of the county. There are two (2) four year State Colleges within 40 miles, 3 major university Branch Campuses within 50 miles, and 4 Universities within 100 miles. We have excellent “local” health facilities, including a hospital less than 10 years old. There are Four (4) Large hospitals, with hundreds of Doctors, within 50 miles.
We have churches of most faiths, active civic clubs, historical sites and events. Bonifay, the County Seat, is home to the “Northwest Florida National Championship Rodeo” held in the Fall drawing over 25000 people, and the “Down Home Street Festival” drawing over 5000 in the Spring. We have an abundance of lakes, rivers, streams and management areas for the avid hunter and fisherman. We have several public parks, and an excellent Golf Course.
